Research Vessel Walton Smith

SHIPBOARD DATA LOGGING SYSTEMS AND COMPUTING FACILITIES
A Virtual Integrated Data System (VIDS) is installed aboard the vessel. This system serves as the central data collection point for all data taken aboard the ship. Data display is Web browser based. All monitored parameters can be displayed on any computer with a web browser. Data is written and transferred to the user at the end of the cruise on DVD-R media.

A Windows 2003 domain primary controller and several backup domain controllers provide access control and data service. The network media is fiber-optic and copper based. employing switched FAST ETHERNET running TCP/IP protocol. Connection to the network is provided in the lab areas and most of the staterooms. In addition, wireless 802.11b access is provided throughout most of the ship.

UNDERWAY DATA COLLECTION PARAMETERS
GPS Position--Position is taken from a Raymarine 120 WAAS GPS and a Raymarine 300 WAAS GPS.
Ship’s Speed-- Speed is taken from the ship's Sperry Doppler Speed log. Speed is resolved to a tenth of a knot.
Gyrocompass-- The ship's gyro heading is taken from the synchro output of the ship's gyrocompass and is resolved to 0.1 degrees.
